You may have heard that expressing gratitude can improve your attitude. According to recent studies, people who are appreciative tend to be happier and healthier, as well as more fulfilled. Gratitude helps us cope with stress and perform at our highest level.

The question is, though, how can you cultivate a spirit of gratitude?

To live a life of gratitude and fulfillment is to seek out the good in everything and everyone around you. Making a point of focusing on the good things in our lives gives us a sense of purpose, boosts our spirits, and gives us the ability to spread that sense of purpose to others.

Keeping a thankfulness notebook is the first step.

Make a point of expressing thankfulness every day. Make a list of ten good things that have happened to you or for which you are grateful every day and keep it with you. It’s amazing how much of a difference it can make to maintain a happy attitude.

Focus on the here and now.

The practice of being totally present and appreciative of what you have rather than longing for something better in the future or regretting what you don’t have can significantly alter your outlook. Keep an eye on yourself and gently remind yourself to return to that time.

Think beyond your own immediate needs.

You can get involved in a cause that is meaningful to you. You’ll have a greater appreciation for what you have when you realize how fortunate you are in comparison to others.

Make sure to spread the love around to your loved ones.

Make it a point to express your gratitude to others on a regular basis, whether it’s by thanking them for their help around the house or for always inviting you out for dinner. To keep doing something, focus on the positive aspects!

Mean it when you say ‘thank you.’

Make it a goal for the entire day to stop and thank the person you’re engaging with, whether it’s someone you know or someone you don’t know. Thank them for their time by pausing, looking them in the eye, and smiling. It’s great if you can go the additional mile and thank them for anything special.

Try it if you think it’s too easy to be important. You’ll be surprised how frequently you say “thank you” in a hurry, without really thinking about what you’re thanking the person for. 

Replace self-criticism with gratitude. 

Use the habit of self-criticism you have and ask yourself to practice self-gratification every time you do it. As you practice this, your inner dialogue will become more soft and compassionate, more in line with the way you speak to the people you cherish.
